2008 Homeland Security S&T Stakeholders Conference–West

The National Defense Industrial Association is presenting this conference with the theme of “Putting First Responders First,” with subject matter support from the Science & Technology (S&T) Directorate of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The State of California Governor's Office of Homeland Security also is a key participant in the event, which is designed to inform first responders, state and local governments, industry, and academia of the direction, emphasis, scope, and status of the research investments of the S&T Directorate, and to describe the business opportunities available for private-sector organizations and universities.

Hospital Security Preparedness
February 5–8, 2008 in Washington, D.C.
Hospital Security Preparedness is a unique course for hospital protective services and law enforcement personnel. This 4-day immersion course uses hands-on training, live drills, and classroom instruction from faculty with extensive security and counter-terrorism experience. Its goal is for class participants to achieve competency in an all-hazards approach for handling threats pertaining to hospital security, from routine situations to mass casualty incidents and terrorist attacks against the facility.

Field Management of Chemical and Biological Casualties Course
February 25–29, 2008 in Aberdeen, Maryland
This course is designed for Medical Service Corps officers, Chemical Corps officers, and noncommissioned officers in medical or chemical specialties. Classroom instruction and laboratory and field exercises prepare graduates to become trainers in the first echelon management of chemical and biological agent casualties.
Border and Maritime Security Conference
February 26–27, 2008 in Washington, D.C.
Attendees will learn how the U.S. government proposes to address the problem of border and maritime security. This will include learning about the technologies that are potentially available to support these efforts, the integration of disparate security systems, and the detection of nuclear materials. Participants will also learn about upcoming legislation and federal initiatives relating to border and maritime security.
Water Facility Security Conference: Pre- and Post-Disaster Emergency Preparedness & Response

A coordinated and effective response to water security issues will depend on cooperation and collaboration among the public health community, first responders, and water authorities to control a public health crisis and prevent serious business continuity issues. 10th Annual Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education Conference

Every year, the U.S. Fire Administration hosts the Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education conference on its campus in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Precision Indoor Personnel Location and Tracking for Emergency Responders Workshop
August 4-6, 2008 in Worcester, Massachusetts
This third annual technology workshop will provide a forum for researchers and developers to share technical knowledge about the indoor location and tracking of emergency response personnel. It will focus on zero preinstalled infrastructure trackingthat is, systems that do not require any previously installed wiring or equipment, such as that required by radio frequency identification systems. The workshop will further focus on systems that provide the incident command post with complete tracking and position information on all equipped personnel. Simpler approaches ("homing devices") will also be considered for the workshop, and a session will be dedicated to the physiological monitoring of first responders. Select representatives of the governmental and user communities will participate.
